Australia has been largely formed through ethnocentric, paternalistic and colonial ideologies, including terra nullius. Understanding this and how it shapes current day society is essential to working towards shifting and challenging racism at all levels in society.

This subject will discuss the differing forms of racism, how it affects not only individuals, but whole communities and cultural groups. The subject will discuss the theoretical tools which underpin the continual perpetuation and exclusion of specific groups within society, focussing largely on First Nations’ fight for justice, sovereignty and equal rights.

The subject will challenge students to evaluate their own lens and prejudices, critically analyse structures in society and how we, as a society, can be better.
